Determining What Kind of Content To Post on Social Media

What’s the most annoying thing you’ve seen online lately? For me, it’s a person of some sort posting a very nice picture they created on Canva with a caption that says, “I would love to help you (fill in the blank). Please reach me at (phone number).”

Why do I hate that? Because it’s boring. What I get from that post is that you are in a specific industry, but that’s only going to reach the audience that follows you and will certainly not gain any new attention or engagement.

So what do I suggest? Determine your tone and voice, and what makes you different!

Why is it so important to be different? Because when you can’t be the best (which isn’t even possible these days), being different is your saving grace. Defining who you are showing people that you are more than your career. You have more interests than just one - you’re human.

What should you do to figure out how you’re different? Time to take a look at yourself and answer a few questions below:

  1. What are your hobbies outside of work?

  2. Are you a part of any groups or clubs?

  3. Where are you from? Does that have a significant impact on your life?

  4. Why did you start doing what you do now?

  5. How did you get there?

  6. Do you have any specific talents?

  7. What’s something everyone close to you know about or says about you?

By answering these questions you’ll start to identify that you aren’t boring.

When I answer those questions I know that I am someone who loves to be outside and is super active. I love paddle boarding, I’m learning how to foil board, I’m a huge thrifter, I love saving money and finding a bargain, and I’m honestly really good at creating something out of nothing. My friends and family would say I’m light-hearted and always try to make the people around me feel better.

So my pillars would be: marketing | reaching my creative or “do it yourself” community | Nature, active outdoor lovers.

What’s so great about formulating something like this is that it becomes so authentic to you, before you know it you can use any content to your advantage.

From there - use a conversational tone. You don’t have to be super professional unless that is who you are. You just have to show people that you know what you are doing!

If you are interested in putting these pillars into action join my workshop on next month. Dates are TBD!
