Does My Service Business Need Google Ads?

This is a question as old as time (well, as old as the birth of Google Ads). Debating whether or not your business should start placing some money into Google in hopes of some visibility, website visits, or sales.

You’ve likely seen a dozen or so ads from agencies or individual PPC (pay-per-click) specialists explaining that you could triple your sales by utilizing their services on Google Ads.

But the truth of the matter is, that’s not always the case.

There are many factors that go into a successful Google Ads campaign and what they don’t always tell you upfront is this. You’re likely going to have to spend A LOT of money to get any traction.

Now my definition of “A LOT” (at least $5,000) of money may not be anything to some businesses, but if you are a service-based business with minimal marketing presence, to begin with, you are going to be spending more than you want.

I know you’re a business owner that is more than capable of spending time learning the best practices of Google Ads, but you likely don’t have time, and that often leads you to hire a specialist.

PPC specialists aren’t magicians, and some of them really shouldn’t be using the word, “specialist” at all.

Hiring a PPC specialist can absolutely help, but a good one is not cheap. I would guess you can expect to pay $2,000 a month for a good specialist, easily.

With all this to be said, and I could keep going, if I was a small to medium-sized service-based business, I would first create a solid organic marketing strategy.

What that means is I would focus on creating a website that captivates your target audience, consistently post on social media channels, and provide meaningful content in a blog and email newsletter.

Now, if you are dying to pay someone, start with a good copywriter and an SEO expert. These people will help your website immensely, as they know how to play Google's game.

Secondly, I would take advantage of my social media channels by sharing content my ideal customer actually wants to see (and I “Happy Thanksgiving” post is likely not doing it).
